On Tuesday 2 November 2010 Nottingham Business School were very pleased to welcome Stefano Pessina, Executive Chairman of Alliance Boots, to launch the School's Business Leaders lecture series for 2010/11.
Stefano's guest lecture entitled The Crucial Value of True Leadership and Entrepreneurship attracted over a hundred and forty guests from across the academic and business community, who were intrigued to find out how Stefano uses his leadership and entrepreneurial skills to help his business maintain its edge.
Stefano, who is currently driving the international expansion of Alliance Boots originally started his career in academia having graduated in nuclear engineering in Italy, before taking over his family's local pharmaceutical wholesale business in the mid-1970's.
It was from this family business that Stefano expanded his business operations through mergers, acquisitions and partnerships to create the leading international pharmacy-led health and beauty group, Alliance Boots.
During the lecture Stefano highlighted that strong businesses do not purely rely on leaders at the top of the business pyramid, but at every level across the business "corporations which shine and outshine their competitors have true leaders throughout – not only in the main driving seat."
"Entrepreneurial businesses have the ability, the speed and the agility to anticipate change, take risks at the right time, seize opportunities and transform constraints and challenges into potential successes". He told his audience that only when a business has both entrepreneurship and strong leadership does it have a winning business formula.
Stefano concluded by summarising how Alliance Boots is on track to becoming a global leader, and an international brand. He set out his solution to problems caused by entrepreneurial businesses entering a global market. His closing remarks were "the crucial value of true leadership and entrepreneurship comes from a strong Alliance between both."
Further guest lectures are planned for the Business Leaders guest lecture series in 2011. For our next guest lecture on Thursday 20 January we delighted to welcome Tony Walker, Deputy Managing Director of Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK. Full details regarding this lecture entitled How employees have helped to drive the growth of Toyota will soon be available online.
