Pro bono - information for students

Our pro bono projects enable you to develop practical legal skills and gain valuable work experience in preparation for your professional life. It also gives you the chance to put something back into the community.

The multi-award winning Legal Advice Centre is an outstanding facility, situated on Level 1 of the Chaucer building. It was opened by the Attorney General in June 2014 and is a fully fledged Law practice, regulated as an Alternative Business Structure by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

There are numerous projects you can get involved in throughout your time at Nottingham Law School. These include:

  • Legal Advice Services: Provide first-level advice to members of the public on a range of legal issues, including employment, housing and welfare benefits. You could also get involved with our Outreach Advice Project, which currently runs in Netherfield and the Nottingham Women's Centre.
  • Free Representation Service: Qualify as a student representative in conjunction with the London-based charity Free Representation Unit (FRU), and represent clients in employment and social security tribunals.
  • Miscarriage of Justice Project: Review and investigate alleged miscarriage of justice cases.
  • Legal Literacy Project: Become part of our Streetlaw project or award-winning Bars in their Eyes scheme.
  • Overseas placement opportunities and scholarships.

We also work with Nottingham Trent Volunteering to provide pro bono and law-related volunteering opportunities with outside organisations, such as the Personal Support Unit. We actively encourage the development of student-directed opportunities too, so if you have a particular interest you could form and run your own project.
