How Changing Consumer Behaviour has Impacted the Logistics Industry

Date: Thursday 27 October 2016

Lecture details
Politicians have always had a conflicted attitude towards business. On the one hand, they need a successful private sector to create jobs and tax receipts; on the other, the standing of banking – and business more generally – was severely damaged by the financial crash and the deep recession which followed. There are plenty of politicians prepared to use populist anti-business rhetoric to win support from angry voters. In this lecture, Simon Walker discussed the political environment in the UK, and analysed the current government's business policies.

With the ever changing lifestyle and demands of the end consumer, the food and drinks industry is rapidly having to adapt to meet expectations with regards to convenience, availability, quality and price. This lecture highlights the different challenges faced by retailers and their supply chain partners.

In 1995 David was appointed Managing Director of NFT Distribution, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northern Foods plc and in August 2006 became CEO after successfully leading a management buyout supported by Phoenix Equity Partners. Subsequently he has steered NFT to inclusion in the Sunday Times / Grant Thornton Top Track 250 Companies List for 2013 and 2014.

David has extensive experience in the food and logistics industry and was selected as a Midlands regional winner in both the BVCA CEO of the Year Award 2012 and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2013. In April 2014 a successful exit by Phoenix saw Hong Kong based EmergeVest take their place as NFT’s private equity partner and majority investor.

David has contributed to the CBI Transport Policy Working Group and after completing a two year term as Chairman of the CBI East Midlands Regional Council he now chairs the CBI Employment and Skills Board. David is also a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
