Placement partnerships

The strength and relevance of our teaching and research is underpinned by a healthy synergy with a network of external businesses and organisations. We have over 200 industrial placement partners, including Microsoft, ARM, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, Schlumberger, HP, Xerox, Siemens, Experian and Nottinghamshire Police as well as numerous small businesses throughout the East Midlands. Our industrial partners contribute to our courses through presentations on placement opportunities as well as through guest lectures within taught modules.

Commercially relevant teaching

They also help enhance the design of our courses through our "Industrial Liaison Forum". This meets every 1-2 years - a selection of industrial partners tell us their requirements as employers and help us to identify industry trends.

GameCity and ITAG

NTU has strong links with the games industry, being home to the internationally renowned GameCity Festival. Computing and Technology plays a major part in the festival in our leadership of the associated Interactive Technologies and Games Conference (ITAG).

Research and consultancy

Our staff are involved in numerous industry-based research and consultancy activities including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). Example organisations that we have worked with include:

  •  Motorola Solutions Inc
  •  Birmingham Institute for the Deaf
  •  the Press Association
  •  the British Geological Survey
  •  Centre of Professional Training in Culture CPPC (Romania); and
  •  Marie Curie Association (Bulgaria).

A recent example is the European funded project entitled MODUM – a €2,350,000 European grant involving a consortium of 9 European partners looking to reduce environmental impact in the transport sector by developing enhanced traffic management utilising state of the art ad-hoc networking.

Our industrial engagement combined with the support students receive to obtain placements mean that our students benefit from excellent opportunities to gain work experience and to be involved in demonstrations and conference events - all of which help to start their careers off on an excellent footing.
