Student finance

If you are a full-time UK home undergraduate student and will be studying or working abroad (with less than ten weeks spent studying at Nottingham Trent University) you may be eligible for the following funding.

Tuition Fee Loans

If you started your course at NTU after 1 September 2016, but before 1 September 2017, your tuition fee during any year spent studying or working abroad will be £1,350 and you can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover this cost.

If you started your course at NTU after 1 September 2015, but before 1 September 2016, your tuition fee during any year spent studying or working abroad will be £900 and you can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover this cost.

If you started your course at NTU after 1 September 2012 but before 1 September 2015, you will not have to pay a tuition fee during any year spent studying or working abroad.

Loans and grants for living costs

If you are studying abroad as part of your course, or you are undertaking an ERASMUS study and / or work placement, you will be entitled to the same package of grants and loans that you would get if you were spending the year studying at NTU.

In these cases, you may be eligible to receive the higher 'overseas' rate of maintenance loan:

The following figures are for students who started their course before 1st September 2016

  • up to £7.180 per year rather than £6,043 per year in 2017/18

The following figures are for students who started their course after 1st September 2016

  • up to £9,654 per year rather than £8,430 per year in 2017/18

You may also be eligible for an additional means-tested travel grant to help with travel-related costs.

Find out more about the funding available for studying abroad in the following Student Finance England guide:

If you will be spending the year doing a non-ERASMUS work placement abroad (e.g. you are choosing to do your sandwich work placement abroad, but it does not come under the ERASMUS scheme) then the reduced funding available to placement students will apply.

NTU bursaries

If you started your course at NTU after 1 September 2015 and are receiving the NTU bursary, then this will be paid during a year of study abroad, or during an ERASMUS study and / or work placement. However, it is not paid during non-ERASMUS work placement years spent abroad.

NTU scholarships

NTU scholarships are only available during years in which the full tuition fee is payable. As such, there is no NTU scholarship available during years of study or work abroad.
