Innovating since 1843
This year marks 175 years since our founding college, the Government School of Design, opened its doors to support the development of skills, innovation and growth within the textiles industry in Nottingham, and protect our global position from emerging manufacturing competition abroad.
NTU’s School of Art & Design continues to occupy the building that was home to the Government School of Design and remains an important hub of innovation, creativity and education to this day.
Our focus – to develop the knowledge, skills and innovations that our economy and society need – has its roots in these origins from 175 years ago.
The celebration of our history gets underway this evening with a distinguished lecture from Professor William Whyte, whose talk ‘Building a University: A Biography of NTU’ will reflect upon the influence of our history and heritage in shaping our past, present and future.
