Meet the Sustainable Development Team

Charmaine Morrell - Sustainable Development Manager

Charmaine is in charge of all things environmental at NTU. She is responsible for the environmental budget, allocating funds for sustainability projects, reducing the University's environmental impact, for external reporting and for heading up the Sustainable Development Team. Charmaine works closely with members of the University Executive Team and colleagues from the Colleges and Professional Services to ensure that sustainability is central to the University's core strategy. Charmaine joined NTU in June 2017 following a varied career as an environmental manager in manufacturing, consultancy and on major infrastructure projects as well as a corporate role for a principal contractor. 

Chris Roy - Sustainable Transport Coordinator

Chris looks after travel plans for NTU, coordinating actions designed to encourage safe, healthy and sustainable travel options for staff and students. He assists in gaining planning permissions for building projects, and meeting BREEAM requirements. Chris collaborates with the local transport authorities and transport operators, developing partnerships to deliver and promote sustainable transport initiatives that benefit NTU and the wider community, such as improvements to the cycle route network, public transport measures, pedestrian safety schemes and promotion of low emission vehicles.

Gillian Moczarski - Sustainable Development Assistant

Gill's main focus is raising awareness and encouraging participation in the environmental agenda at NTU. Working part–time, she organises NTU's activities for Fairtrade Fortnight, open days and supports the team's other projects as and when necessary. Gill also looks after the Sustainability web pages, keeping staff and students up to date with everything the team is working on.

Rachel Unwin - Sustainable Development Assistant 

Rachel joined the team in October 2017 after having previously worked in Durham University's Environment Team. Rachel now works on various sustainability projects, benchmarking and supporting the team with other environmental projects as needed.

Chris Pryke–Hendy - Sustainable Development Projects Officer 

Chris joined the team in summer 2013 having spent several years working for local charities and completing an MA in Environmental Management. Chris is currently working on developing a network of green spaces at the city site. He ensures that building projects at NTU meet BREEAM requirements, and he is the main point of enquiry for students.

Sarah Robertson - Sustainable Development Projects Officer (on maternity leave)

Sarah is our key contact for sustainable development on our City, Clifton and Confetti campuses. She works closely with NTU's estates managers and external contractors to ensure that all building and development projects are as sustainable as possible and meet BREEAM requirements. 

Laura Green - Sustainable Development Engagement Officer (on maternity leave)

Laura previously worked with the team in 2010 as the student placement Environmental Engagement Assistant. Following her graduation in 2012, she joined the team again to lead on staff and student engagement. Her main focus is coordinating and managing Green Impact, organising NTU's annual Green Week, and managing our partnership with the British Heart Foundation.

Ellie Lewis – Sustainable Development Projects Officer (maternity cover)

Ellie joined the team after working for several years with a national wildlife charity, working in policy, campaigns and communications. Having joined NTU in early 2019, Ellie leads on staff and student engagement, including management of the Green Rewards scheme for staff. Ellie also leads on the Plastic Planet campaign and our biodiversity-focussed projects.

Olivia Hillman – Sustainable Development Engagement Assistant

Livvy is on work placement with the team between the second and third year of her Ecology and Environmental Management degree. Starting in July 2017, Livvy supports the team to keep us connected with the student body – helping plan events like Green Week and running projects such as the Foodshare allotment. Livvy is also gaining experience supporting the upkeep of our ISO14001 standard, along with a range of other sustainable development areas.

Emma Georgiou - Environmental Compliance Officer 

Emma has extensive experience in waste management and looks after the University's EcoCampus and ISO 14001 certifications.

Dewi Howell – Sustainable Development Projects Coordinator

Dewi joined the team in January 2019 after previously spending several years working for an environmental charity on energy efficiency and sustainability projects and undertaking a role in the sustainability team at Durham University. Dewi works on carbon reduction projects and is also involved in sustainable procurement.

Fabio Henriques – Cycle Hire Coordinator

Fabio is our resident bike mechanic at the workshop behind the City Students’ Union. He can help with repairs or loan you a bike on Mondays and Thursdays 12-7pm. 

Kieran Duffy - Graduate Project Coordinator

Kieran is on the Graduate Development Programme after graduating from International Business in July 2018. He started in August 2018, supporting the Sustainable Development Team with a focus on the Considerate Constructors Scheme and water reduction projects. He also works on other projects in the Estates department related to postgraduate study areas and space utilisation.

Tracey Lloyd –Lead Allotment Gardener

Tracey has led our weekly volunteering sessions, educating both staff and students since 2014. Tracey has extensive experience in harvesting fresh organic fruit and vegetables using sustainable and zero waste practices. She has also connected our Clifton campus allotment to the Nottingham Growing Network to support local community wellbeing through improved access to nature and greenspaces.
