Academic dress for students

Please remember that graduands and diplomates are expected to wear the University academic dress for the ceremony. To hire or purchase your graduation outfit, please visit Ede and Ravenscroft online. 

The colour of your attire is dependent upon the qualification achieved:

Honorary robe
Honorary: Scarlet gown, gold trim
Higher Doctorate robe
Higher Doctorate: Scarlet gown, silver trim
PhD robe
PhD: Maroon gown, silver trim
Professional  Doctorate robe
Professional Doctorate: Maroon gown, black trim
MPhil robe
MPhil: Black gown, silver trim
MBA, MPA robe
MBA, MPA: Black gown, ruby 2” trim
Arts robe
Arts: Black gown, yellow trim. MA 2”, BA 1”, FDA ½”
Engineering robe
Engineering: Black gown, blue trim. BEng 1”, FDEng ½”
Law robe
Law: Black gown, rust trim. LLM 2”, LLB 1”
Science robe

There is no compulsory formal dress code. However, smart dress is appropriate and a blouse or shirt makes it easier to attach your hood. This may be an appropriate opportunity to wear your national dress.

Before you start your booking, please make sure you know your head circumference in centimetres (follow the diagram below) plus your chest and height measurements.

To hire or purchase your graduation outfit:

  • Visit the Ede and Ravenscroft website.

Please book early – Ede and Ravenscroft cannot always guarantee an order if you leave your booking later than 21 days before your ceremony.

You will be able to collect your academic dress from the Newton building on Goldsmith Street in Nottingham. This will be indicated on the map in the additional information sent to you nearer the time. Signs and stewards will direct you on the day of the ceremony.

If your ceremony takes place in the morning, please collect your gown between 08.00 and 10.00. If your ceremony takes place in the afternoon, please collect your gown between 11:00 and 13:30
