Clifton Students’ Union upgrade
To make your social facilities even better, The Point Students’ Union is being upgraded. Plans include a two-storey extension which will provide new social and leisure spaces for students as well as newly configured offices for Students’ Union staff. Works are expected to be completed ready for the start of Welcome Week in October 2018.
Engineering building and Institute of Industrial Digitalisation, Robotics and Automation (IIDRA)
The impressive Engineering building will be home to the Department of Engineering and will feature attractive and flexible learning and teaching spaces provisioned with specialist equipment. There will also be facilities for commercial research, professional development and consultancy activity.
Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF)
We are also building a new Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF) at the back of the Rosalind Franklin building this summer. This will focus on multidisciplinary research and development.
These two multimillion pound developments will be the next step to enhancing our reputation as a leading Science, Maths, Engineering and Technology (STEM) campus.
Completed developments
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Engagement Centre (ISTEC)
Our impressive new Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Engagement Centre (ISTEC), contains two levels of state-of-the-art laboratories for Bioscience, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Sport Science and Engineering and is utilised by undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as research scientists.
New Heart of Campus
Clifton Campus has already seen the multi-million pound development of our Heart of Campus project – creating a truly inspiring location in which to live and study. The Pavilion offers two levels of bright comfy social spaces - from secluded learning pods, to large collaborative booths, and everything in-between. There’s also a Barista-style café, and a spacious Reception area.
The Teaching and Learning building, which adjoins the Pavilion, has three lecture theatres, eight teaching rooms, and two seminar rooms. All of these are fitted with the latest audio-visual equipment, and the flexibility to change classroom layouts.
The Refectory
Next door to the Pavilion, is the Refectory. We’ve upgraded the decor, furniture, and lighting, and the impressive lantern roof brings in lots of natural daylight, whatever the weather. In addition, we’ve added three new serveries, an eclectic mix of soft seating, three IT study pods, and an outdoor-eating area. It’s an enjoyable and relaxing dining experience, for both students and staff.
Clifton Sports Village
To make your sporting experience at NTU even better we’ve invested in new facilities for football and tennis. We’ve added a 3G pitch, a Clubhouse equipped with changing rooms, social spaces and a viewing area, and a fantastic new indoor tennis centre boasting a large timber structure covering 4 tennis courts and built to British Tennis specification. Find out about what other facilities are on offer at NTU Sport.
Clifton library
As well as a full internal upgrade with cheerful new décor and a brand new layout, the library has recently seen the addition of a stunning new entrance. This redevelopment sees the culmination of two years of refurbishment works, which have transformed the library into a bright and spacious place, putting it at the very heart of the campus. Read more on this in our Libraries section.
Green Zone
To keep our new buildings and spaces looking their best we have introduced a Green Zone. This is an area on campus that is free from smoking, unauthorised vehicles and parking of bicycles. This map shows the boundary line for the Green Zone and also where the designated smoking areas are and also where the designated smoking areas are.
Other recent developments
Multi-use laboratory: The Rosalind Franklin building
The high-specification multi-use centre allows up to 200 students to work simultaneously and provides some of the UK's finest laboratory facilities for Chemistry and Biosciences. It encourages collaborative work between different sciences and provides a multimedia rich environment to support excellent teaching, training, and learning. Internationally renowned research will also be housed in the building.
Sports Village
Exceptional sport and fitness facilities are available for amateur enthusiasts and aspiring Olympians alike.
Over £5 million has been invested over the last three years, including in the development of the Lee Westwood Sports Centre and, more recently, a new blue artificial turf hockey pitch has been installed to provide a performance very similar to that of the London 2012 Olympics pitches.
Other developments include four new tennis courts, also in blue, and a new artificial pitch for football and rugby.
Halls of residence
Our vibrant and sustainable student residences provide a total of over 700 modern, functional and comfortable bedrooms, grouped around spacious and stylish kitchens and living areas – dramatically enhancing the living environment for students.
The residences are also the site for our ambitious solar panel installation, which is one of the largest in the UK. A total of 132 solar panels have been installed, providing 33,000 litres of hot water each day and saving 61 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The Point
The students' social venue, The Point, has been completely refurbished. Capacity has almost doubled, with two dance floors providing variety and flexibility.
Clifton Library
Clifton Campus Library was refurbished with new furniture, shelving, carpets, decoration and an exciting new layout.
There is now a more diverse range of study spaces, more bookable group study rooms, additional silent study spaces and open access group study furniture.
We've doubled the number of PCs and there are more spaces where you can plug in and use your own mobile device.
