Newton / Arkwright
The transformation of two historic buildings - Newton and Arkwright
The most significant estate development in our history has been the ambitious regeneration of the Newton and Arkwright buildings, which will deliver a truly inspirational learning environment for generations of students.
A stunning piece of contemporary architecture was inserted between the two Grade II* listed buildings, Newton and Arkwright. The centrepiece is an impressive, glazed centre court with a walk-round balcony, leading from the new entrance conveniently situated by the NTU tram stop.
All the essential student services are located there, as well as cafes and deli-bars and lots of space where students can meet and mingle and discuss course work and more.
In the Newton building, students have an abundance of teaching space, a range of lecture theatres of different sizes and masses of space for social learning.
The quadrangle provides a quiet space for thinking and developing creative ideas, and right next to it is the building where silicone was invented by Dr Frederick Kipping in the late 19th century!
