Respect at NTU – Give it. Get it. Expect it
We encourage all members of the NTU community to be aware of their behaviour and interaction with others - and of the impact this may have. Discriminatory and negative behaviour is not tolerated and may also be unlawful. This includes:
- sexism
- misogyny / misandry
- transphobia
- homophobia
- sexual harassment
- sexual assault
- sexual violence
- racism
- other associated hate incidents.
It also includes the use of social media to demean and humiliate. Behaviour that breaches the Student Code of Behaviour can result in very serious consequences, including expulsion from the University.

Consent is everything
Sexual consent is a voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity, having the freedom and capacity to make the choice. To be able to give your consent you should be sure that it is your decision and not one you have been pressured to make. It's not enough to just assume someone wants sex - consent must be sought as well as freely given. The law in Britain says that both people need to give their consent before sex or any physical closeness. If you are thinking about having sex with someone who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stop and think: are they in a position to give their consent freely?

Getting help
If you are concerned that you may have been the victim of a sexual assault or violence in a relationship, there are a number of services that can help you:
The Topaz Centre, Nottinghamshire Sexual Assault Referral Centre
A specialist 24/7 service for people 18+ who have been raped or sexually assaulted. Visit the Topaz Centre website or contact them via email or telephone, on 0800 085 9993.
East Midlands Children and Young People's Sexual Assault Service (EMCYPSAS)
The Sexual Assault Referral Centre for anyone who is 17 years or younger. Visit the EMCYPSAS website or contact them via phone 0800 183 0023.
Nottinghamshire Sexual Violence Support Services
Helpline and counselling for survivors of rape and sexual abuse. Visit NSVSS website or telephone 0115 941 0440.
Survivors UK
Offers support for men who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and/or adult assault/rape. Visit Survivors UK website or telephone 0203 598 3898.
Women's Aid

Advice and guidance at NTU
If you believe that you have been a victim of sexual harassment or assault, there are several points of advice and guidance available to you at NTU:
Student Accommodation Services
If you are a resident in NTU accommodation, your residence manager can provide initial advice and guidance. During evenings and weekends, the facilities officer on duty can refer you to the University's warden service for initial support.
Student Support Services
Student Support Services can provide confidential guidance and support to all students on consent and assault matters, including information on specialist services and support with practical and academic matters. You can make contact via email or via telephone 0115 848 6880.
