Mature students

We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds, including a significant number of mature students (traditionally defined as undergraduates over 21). Your background, whether it is in full-time education, working, family life or travel, will help to enrich the student experience here.

We realise that you may have concerns about:

  • fitting in with younger students
  • confidence in your academic ability
  • the impact of starting at university on other aspects of your life (for example, family, relationships, friendships, work, childcare, commuting or moving to a new area).

All of our Student Support Services Teams are aware of the specific challenges which mature students can face and they are experienced in helping mature students to overcome any challenges which may arise.

We also realise that financial issues are of particular concern to most mature students, as many have additional responsibilities which may include mortgages and family-related costs. Such considerations make it vital to plan in advance for any change in your financial situation. That's why we provide a wealth of information to help you to plan your finances effectively. To find out about the support available, please see the Student Financial Support Service pages.
